For the first year WiFi SPARK has provided WiFi to the Future of Web Development (FOWD) event at New Worlds Stages in New York. Over 500 budding entrepreneurs and experts from across the globe attended this event to learn about the latest developments to hit the Internet.

The WiFi for an event like this is crucial and needs to be robust, reliable and fast. The last thing that a presenter wants is for a HD video to start buffering or websites taking an age to load! With this in mind and with the anticipated numbers of attendees we architected the right solution. On the day, we had close to 500 active devices connecting through the WiFi at any one time! Far more than a ‘normal’ WiFi network can cope with.

So how did we do this? For a start we didn’t spare any expense. The equipment we used comprised 16 high specification, dual radio, POE access points managed by one powerful central controller. At the heart of the network our own designed SPARK Server was deployed for user management, bandwidth control and splash screen presentation.

At events like FOWD we do things right, and having the right tools for the job is essential. Here are some key features that are a must for a large event like this

    This enables the WLAN to automatically and intelligently adapt to changes in the RF environment to eliminate unforeseen gaps in coverage.
  • Spectrum Analysis
    Crucial to prevent interference from other radio devices in the area
  • Bandwidth Control
    Providing bandwidth control is absolutely vital and to ensure that everyone gets an equal share of the bandwidth. With our SPARK Server we were also able to provide higher speeds and priority for the sponsors and presenters.
  • Client Blocking
    Prevent other people on the network from seeing and hacking in to other users computers
  • Content Filtering
    Preventing unnecessary downloads of torrents and other peer-to-peer material helps take the strain off the network. Our state of the art filtering also reduced the likelihood of illegal or copyrighted downloading all of which is unwelcome in an event like this.

For the organisers and us the event was a great success. The users too benefited from world class WiFi that makes such a connected and web centric event work.
