University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is made up of three NHS teaching hospitals in Leicester. The Trust treat more than one million people each year and have nationally and internationally recognised centres of excellence in cardiac, renal and cancer care.
Business Situation
The Trust needed a facility to offer all patients and visitors access to the internet across three of the Trust hospitals. The solution needed to be self-funding with any financial return from the service being credited to the specific hospital relating to the WiFi uptake. This system needed to be scalable with a view to expansion into the PCT at a later date.
Solution
A SPARK Gateway was installed into each of the hospital’s data centres and fed by a suitable IP connection provided by WiFi SPARK. The SPARK service was deployed over the existing hospital clinical WiFi infrastructures direct to the users. No additional hardware was required in the wards which ensured that no disruption was experienced to existing infrastructure, staff or patients.
Functionality
The patients can use their own wireless device or laptop to search for the wireless network WiFi SPARK Guest WiFi. Once the user has connected to the network, they are then redirected to the Trust branded WiFi SPARK welcome page. From here they can choose from a number of sign in methods including buying time securely online or the option to sign in with a voucher. Unlike other WiFi providers, WiFi SPARK lets you choose the tariff and payment methods for your patients.
Conclusion
To further enhance the hospital’s range of facilities and services, the SPARK system provides patients and visitors a means of internet access from the comfort of their beds at fantastic value. The Trust also benefits from a share of the monthly revenue straight into the hospital’s nominated bank account.
