April 2011 has seen the introduction of the WiFi SPARK Wireless Service in a number of marinas including Sutton Harbour Marina. The Marina is in a unique location alongside Plymouth’s historic Barbican, and just a stroll away from Plymouth Hoe and the thriving City Centre. With a massive 490 sheltered berths within Sutton Harbour Marina, including West Pier Marina and Guys Quay Marina, berth holders are spoiled for choice.
The Requirement
Sutton Harbour Marina already had a wireless solution in place but were receiving poor feedback from the berth holders about the system being slow, receiving a weak signal and just generally unreliable. The Marina also wanted the facility to offer the service for free to their berth holders.
Solution
WiFi SPARK provided 2 high-speed ADSL lines along with 2 clusters directional antennas to cover the marina. We used our SPARK gateway on each ADSL line to manage the log in process and bandwidth control for each user. Due to the high number of wireless networks in the area, we then completed a spectrum analysys to ensure that there was no interference when connecting to our service.
Functionality
Anyone using the system is automatically redirected to a fully branded Sutton Harbour Marina WiFi Welcome Page which provides a number of free to access links and various access methods for using the service.
All berth holders of Sutton harbour Marina have been provided with individual usernames and passwords which grant them free unlimited access to the Internet through the SPARK system. They simply click “Log in” on the Welcome Page and enter their username and password.
The Welcome Page also offers visitors the facility to purchase time on-line using a credit card.
Conclusion
Sutton Harbour Marina has been another successful rollout of our wireless system for our ever-increasing portfolio of marinas. The system implementation has proved very popular with visitors and berth holders alike and is now providing them a stable and fast connection to the Internet for work or recreation.
